Originally a story Cleese heard as a child, he decided to use the message that he hated, the idea that if one simply didn’t give up they couldn’t possibly lose. It was originally a story of two Roman wrestlers who had a very intense fight. One of the wrestlers eventually tapped out only to find his opponent dead already. The fact that the Black Night just refused to die was Cleese’s way of harpooning the story.
