Creative Differences
Of course, Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder grew very close over the years, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have their differences. After Young Frankenstein became such a success, Brooks decided he wanted to try making a musical adaptation of the film. However, Wilder told Brooks he didn’t feel convinced that it would translate well into a Broadway show. Despite Wilder’s concerns, Brooks went ahead but the production failed and only lasted two years.
Worthy Cause
Many knew that Gene Wilder was very generous and compassionate. During a special benefit for 9/11, Wilder revisited one of his most beloved roles. At this event for families affected by the tragic terrorist attack, Wilder read from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory there at the Westport Country Playhouse. In the same year, he donated a number of his personal possessions for the libraries at University of Iowa.
