Actually, it was Gene Wilder who came up with the concept for Young Frankenstein and got Mel Brooks to direct it. Wilder had finally got a box office hit with Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask), a Woody Allen film, in 1972. Around then, he started to invent this hilarious plot around Victor Frankenstein’s grandson and pitched it to Mel Brooks during the last few weeks of shooting Blazing Saddles. Finally, he convinced Brooks when he said Frankenstein’s grandson was ashamed of the family, and Brooks found that hysterical. That’s how we got the hit film!
