Veterans deemed the movie’s battle scenes are far too realistic – so much so that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs even set up a nationwide toll-free hotline so that veterans and their families could call if they should even slightly feel unsettled by any of the war scenes depicted.

When casting the film, Spielberg was determined to construct a cast which “looked” the part, in an interview, he said, “You know, the people in World War II actually looked different than people look today”, adding to this end that he cast partly based on wanting the cast “to match the faces I saw on the newsreels.”
