Busy Year
1996 was an insanely busy year – as Steven Spielberg was filming Saving Private Ryan and The Lost World: Jurassic Park all at the same time. However the screenwriter David Franzoni actually rewrote Amistad at this time, which was so successful that Spielberg directed that film in between the other two! #beast
London Set
Due to the logistics of having to shoot an almost destroyed French city, they chose a very fictional bombed out city in Ramelle. Which was entirely made up at the Hatfield Aerodrome – this now acts as a closed WWII air base just 30 miles outside of London. It took the crew four months to build the whole of the half-demolished city set. Heck to make it MORE believable, a bunch of rubble was bought from nearby construction sites and then dumped on the set.
