Martin was a longtime heavy smoker, which may have contributed to his “bad boy” cool image. Seeing celebrities smoking on TV was very much the norm back in the day, though it may be jarring for audiences to see, it was extremely normal then.

In September 1993, Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He was told that in order to prolong his life, surgery was his only option.
