In 1948, Don graduated from West Virginia University. He studied Speech as one of his majors as it would be beneficial to him one day if he became an actor. He received a degree in education and went on to become a teacher.

Knotts was born in 1924 in Morgantown, West Virginia. He had three older brothers. His father suffered a mental breakdown and became paranoid schizophrenic after Don was born. He also struggled with substance abuse. This fueled Don to do something with his life.
