You may not have noticed, but Alan Young was actually forced to dye his hair. His actual hair color was a light blonde, but that blended in with Mister Ed’s mane and coat. Thus, the production team had a makeup artist on set to regularly dye his hair. Then when the show ended, he went back to his natural color.

Remember that special trainer, Les Hilton, that we mentioned earlier? Well, the horse was so stubborn that he only responded to commands from Les Hilton. That meant that Hilton always needed to be on set in order to direct Mister Ed either with hand motions or commands.
