Saudi Arabia is always in the news when it comes to politics, but how much do you really know about their royal family? Yes, you know the country is full of oil, but it’s time to hear the real story. All that oil money has stayed within the royal family or the House of Saud. Time to meet this family behind the absolute monarchy in the largest country in the Middle East.

The King

Naturally, we have to start with King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. In January 2015, King Abdullah passed away. Thus, his half-brother Salman was crowned king. King Salman is father to thirteen kids and used to be the governor of Saudi’s capital Riyadh, where most of the princes and princesses reside. One CIA informant reported that Salman, “ensured any family transgressions were dealt with smoothly and quietly, with no publicity.”

Now, on to the next royal. This prince is not your average! While Prince Sultan Bin Salman Al Saud was 28 he traveled as a payload specialist on STS-51-G Discovery. Thus, he became the first Arab and first Muslim to ever visit space! Anyway, he’s the second son of King Salman. Sadly, his older brother died in 2000 due to heart failures. This prince’s mother is Sultana bint Turki Al Sudairi who passed away in 2011.
