One of the most important values that is upheld in the military is that of respect. One of the main manifestations of this is the fact that soldiers call every man or woman “sir” or “ma’am.” This applies to life after the military as well. This sign of respect is extended to everyone, whether it’s the mailman, a judge, or a salesperson. Respect is reserved for everyone.
