Another best film of the year, Guillermo del Toro directed the famous film, The Shape of Water. Perhaps, you know a bit about his style from his previous work like Pan’s Labyrinth or Blade II. Back to The Shape of Water, the film won for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and naturally, Guillermo del Toro also received an Academy for Best Director, Golden Globe and several other awards. It’s no wonder why, his films are unique and evocative, often tying in fairy tale themes and poetic visuals and even symbolic monsters.

If we need to convince you to see You Were Never Really Here, you should know it got a 7 minute standing ovation at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Yeah enough said really. Well, we’ll give you some more on the fabulous director Lynne Ramsay. So this director adapted the novella of the same title and her film stars Joaquin Phoenix. He plays a contract killer trying to save a young girl from prostitution, but uncovers a conspiracy of sorts along the way. Much of Ramsay’s work revolves around death, grief, guilt and young people or children going through these experiences.
